須佐ホルンフェルス
At the about halfway point on the way to Hagi from Masuda on Route 191, there is a coast called Susa Hornfels which is interesting in terms of its topography, and it is also a sightseeing spot.
Hornfels, which means “solid rock” in German, is a type of metamorphic rock that is a sedimentary rock such as mudstone or sandstone. It was born under the influence of the heat of magma about 1500 thousand years ago. It was formed by the metamorphism caused by the heat of a high-temperature igneous rock body that penetrated into the Susa layer Group, which consists of alternating layers of sand and mud deposited on the bottom of the sea.
It’s a nationally designated scenic spot, and it’s also a Japan Geo-park.
